What is accessibility?

Accessibility involves two key issues: how users with disabilities access electronic information and how web content designers and developers enable web pages to function with assistive devices used by individuals with certain physical disabilities.

For the user with a disability, the challenge is to identify tools that provide the most convenient access to web-based and other electronic information. For the web content designer/developer, the challenge is to remove the obstacles that prevent accessibility tools from functioning effectively. In many cases, these challenges are relatively simple to overcome, but sometimes the solutions require additional thought and effort.*

Why should I make my content accessible?

To reach the broadest range of learners, additional steps must be taken to assure accessibility. By following the guidelines for accessible content, compliance with federal regulations and laws is ensured. Who benefits from accessible content?


According to the 2012 United States Census, one in five Americans have a disability. That is 56.7 million people, or almost 20% of the population.

Web accessibility also benefits people without disabilities. For example, a key principle of Web accessibility is designing websites and software that are flexible to meet different user needs, preferences, and situations. This flexibility also benefits people without disabilities in certain situations, such as people using a slow Internet connection, people with "temporary disabilities" such as a broken arm, and people with changing abilities due to aging.
